Seymour Speakers
Role Reference Sheet

Please use this reference sheet to follow along—a brief explanation of all of the roles present in a typical meeting are provided (not all roles will be present at all meetings).

Sergeant at Arms—this is the first person who will take the lectern at the start of the meeting.  The Sergeant at Arms provides all of the “logistical” support required for the meeting so that the meeting runs smoothly.

Chairperson—the Chair arranges the agenda, chooses a theme for the meeting, and manages all aspects of the meeting.  He/she welcomes all of the speaking roles and ensures that the energy is high, the flow is smooth, and that the meeting runs on time.

Grammarian—a.k.a. the “Grammar Police”.  The Grammarian introduces a ‘Word of the Day’ to the audience, which all speakers are encouraged to use.  He/she also monitors the use of positive and negative language and grammar and feeds this back to all participants at the end of the meeting—fines are involved for rule-breakers!

Timer—timing is everything, and everything is timed!  The Timer tracks the actual time taken by all participants in the meeting and compares this to the time that they were allotted.  He/she works with the Chair and other participants to ensure that the meeting runs according to schedule.

Table Topics Master—The Table Topics Master runs the impromptu speaking portion of the program.  He/she asks guests and club members (typically those with no other roles) to speak for a short period (1-2min) on a “surprise” topic, in keeping with the chosen theme.  Guests are free to decline the invitation if they so wish (although we would love for you to participate).

Table Topics Evaluator—all participants in a Toastmasters meeting are provided with formal feedback to help them improve.  The Table Topics Evaluator provides feedback to each of the Table Topics speakers on the organization and delivery of their impromptu speech.

Humorist—everyone loves a good joke!  The Humorist provides comic relief through the telling of a joke or short anecdote.  This also allows him/her to practice their ability to deliver a joke in front of an audience because one never knows when they might get called upon!

Toastmaster—the Toastmaster kicks off the formal speaking portion of the meeting with a toast to an individual or event of their choosing.  Following this, he/she introduces each of the Speakers and their

Evaluators-Evaluations form an important part of development within Toastmasters.  Speech Evaluators (one per Speaker) provide feedback on speech organization and delivery in keeping with the objectives of the particular speech project that the Speaker is working on.

Inspirator—positioned closer to the end of the meeting, the role of the Inspirator is to inspire, raise the spirits of, or motivate the audience towards a particular cause or action.

General Evaluator—the General Evaluator reviews the entire meeting and provides feedback to all those on the agenda who have, as yet, not received any feedback.  He/she also presents the awards for Most Improved and Best Table Topics Speakers, Best Speaker, and Best Evaluator.
